Byron is one of London’s most distinctive neighbourhoods — and if you live here, you already know that. Bounded by the Thames River to the north, Springbank Park to the east, and the expanding new subdivisions pushing toward Wickerson Road and Southdale Road, Byron is a community that takes its appearance seriously. Homes here range from $700,000 to well over a million dollars. Lawns need to match.

But Byron presents some lawn care challenges that are genuinely different from the rest of London. The neighbourhood is hilly — unusually so for this part of Ontario. Snake Hill on Commissioners Road West is the most famous example, but Byron’s rolling terrain runs throughout the neighbourhood, and sloped properties require specific mowing techniques, proper mowing direction, and careful edging to look sharp and stay healthy. Flat-rate crews that aren’t paying attention can scalp slopes, leave uneven cuts on grades, and miss trimming along the irregular edges that come with hilly lots.

There’s also the soil story. Byron sits adjacent to the Byron Gravel Pit — one of the largest in Canada — and properties near the pit, particularly along Byron Baseline Road and in the newer developments to the south and west, often have soil with elevated gravel and sand content. This means drainage is fast, nutrients don’t linger, and lawns in these areas need a different fertilization approach than properties on the neighbourhood’s older, more established streets near Boler Road and Commissioners Road West.
