Sod Installation vs. Lawn Restoration in London, Ontario: Two Recent Projects

Not every lawn needs the same fix. Some properties need a complete reset with new sod. Others can be brought back with lawn repair, aeration, and overseeding.

SG Mowing recently finished two projects in London, Ontario that show the difference โ€” one full sod installation, one lawn restoration.

Project 1: Sod Installation in London, Ontario

The first property was past the point of routine lawn care. Grass coverage was poor, weeds had taken over, and large sections were bare. Gradual repair didn’t make sense, so we recommended new sod.

Preparation came first. We removed the old vegetation, prepared the soil, and created a clean surface for the new turf. Laying sod over a poorly prepared base leads to uneven growth, drainage problems, and roots that never establish.

Then grading. The area was levelled for a consistent surface and a better growing environment. Depending on the property, topsoil and additional grading can be part of this stage.

Finally, the sod went down. Each piece laid tight against the next for continuous coverage. The change was immediate โ€” damaged lawn to full green lawn in a day.

New sod still needs care. Consistent watering and light foot traffic through the first few weeks are what let the roots take hold.

When sod installation makes sense

  • Much of the existing lawn is dead
  • Extensive bare patches
  • Weeds have become unmanageable
  • Exposed or disturbed soil
  • You want a fast transformation
  • New construction property
  • The lawn is beyond practical repair

If your grass is thin but alive, aeration and overseeding is usually the better route. Learn more about sod installation in London, Ontario.

Project 2: Lawn Restoration in London, Ontario

The second property was a different call. Instead of replacing the lawn, we improved what was already there.

We started with an assessment. Grass coverage, bare areas, soil condition, compaction, thatch buildup, drainage, weed growth, debris, and overall thickness. The goal is figuring out what the lawn actually needs โ€” not defaulting to new sod.

Cleanup and prep followed. Removing unwanted vegetation, clearing debris, cutting back overgrowth, dethatching where buildup was blocking new growth, and preparing damaged sections.

Then core aeration and overseeding. Aeration relieves compaction and opens the soil so seed, water, and nutrients reach the root zone. Overseeding fills thin areas and builds density over the following weeks. We offer lawn aeration and overseeding in London, Ontario as a standalone service too.

When to overseed in Ontario: early fall is the strongest window โ€” warm soil, cooler air, less weed competition. Spring is the second-best option.

When lawn restoration beats new sod

  • Healthy grass across much of the property
  • Thin lawn, but not dead
  • Soil compaction is the main issue
  • Bare spots can be repaired rather than replaced
  • The property mainly needs cleanup
  • You’d rather improve the lawn gradually

Our lawn care and restoration services in London are built around the actual condition of the property.

Which Does Your Property Need?

Sod installation suits properties needing a full reset. Lawn restoration works when there’s enough healthy grass to build on.

An assessment will tell you whether you need new sod, grass seed, overseeding, core aeration, dethatching, topsoil, grading, lawn cleanup, or a combination.
